In Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, the surgeon creates a small pouch at the top of the stomach. The pouch will be the only receiver of food, which will reduce food intake to significant amount.
A cut is made in the small intestine below the stomach, which is then joined with the pouch. Food flows directly from the pouch into this part of the intestine. The main part of the stomach, however, continues to make digestive juices. This type of surgery reduces the volume of the stomach but it also aims to by-pass a part of the intestines so that a portion of the nutrients is discarded without being absorbed. In effect, patients feel full with smaller amounts of food and can only absorb a portion of their nutrient intake.
In this surgery, pouch is disconnected from the stomach and the first part of small intestine known as duodenum is connected to part of small intestine called as jejunum which is little bit far down. After surgery, food is passed to jejunum via stomach, bypassing duodenum.
After surgery, patient is not supposed to eat for 1-2 days, which results in proper healing of stomach and digestive system. Patient is then told to follow a strict diet for 12 weeks. Initially patient is kept on liquid diet followed by soft food and then regular food. One may have limitations on the amount of food and the type of food and drink.
Frequent medical checkups are done after this weight loss surgery. Patient may experience changes in the body, as it undergoes quick weight loss in 3-6 months. Body ache, cold, dry skin, mood swing, hair loss are some common symptoms after surgery.
A patient can lose up 70% of weight in 18 months with this surgery. This procedure helps in curing type 2 diabetes. Patients’ hormones will be adjusted through weight loss which will ultimately increase testosterone and improve metabolism. Once the weight is reduced it becomes easier for patients to do regular exercise and maintain healthy diet which further increases the chances of more weight loss.
