Sports medicine is a multidisciplinary specialty. A sports medicine physician is a doctor who has underwent a significant amount of training in both the treatment and prevention of illness and injury in active people. The sports medicine physician is often the first point of contact for the patient in order to make an accurate diagnosis and who then develops and coordinates a treatment plan for those suffering from sporting injuries. Not only dealing with elite athletes, a Sports Medicine Physician use expertise gained from managing elite athletes and apply the same principles of management to recreational athletes and general fitness participants to enable maximised function and minimise disability.
